MED 24 Tirana was a youth meeting involving 50 youths from all five shores of the Mediterranean held in Tirana, Albania, from September 15-21, 2024. The focus of the meeting was to bring together individuals of different backgrounds to explore how we can foster a culture of inter-religious dialogue and fraternity in order to create a more peaceful and just society.

Whilst the overarching topic was to emphasize inter-religious dialogue in the Mediterranean, our meetings focused on three key themes. The first was narrative: our personal and collective stories shape who we are as individuals. The second was dialogue: this is a key theme; empathic and meaningful dialogue is required between individuals, cultures and religions. The third theme was calling: a call to action to counter injustice and build peace.

The program included discussions with bishops, including Mons. Galea Curmi from Malta, and other participants as well as meaningful moments of prayer. The visits to Tirana city centre, as well as visits to Shkodër, Fier and Berat helped me understand the rich history of Albania involving different religions living in communion and fraternity.

On a personal level, these meetings were an opportunity for me to listen actively to my Mediterranean colleagues, understand more about their perspectives & culture and learn new skills relating to meaningful dialogue. The fraternity and togetherness I experienced at these meetings felt truly spiritual and was a clear evidence of the strength there is in putting aside our differences and finding a common way forward through dialogue.
