In August 2025, Destiny Salerno Mercieca and I had the opportunity to join the crew of the sixth stage of MED 25 on the Bel Espoir. Our journey began in Durrës, Albania, and took us across the Adriatic to Trieste, Italy.

The theme of our stage was Migration Challenges. We started in Durrës with a series of conferences and workshops organized in collaboration with the Albanian Archdiocese and Caritas. These sessions gave us the chance to reflect, discuss, and visit important religious sites. Once at sea, our days were enriched with ongoing dialogues around migration-related issues— conversations about peace, generosity, and the value of meaningful encounters.

The voyage was more than just sailing; it was about connection. Onboard, we built friendships with people from across the Mediterranean, sharing stories, faith, and culture. This exchange was deeply rewarding and eye-opening. When we arrived in Trieste, we were warmly welcomed by local diocesan representatives and the Caritas team, who had also prepared a series of excursions and meetings on migration challenges.

Though at times the experience was demanding, it left me with a profound sense of knowledge and connection. Living closely with about 20 people from such diverse cultures—French, Lebanese, Egyptian, Italian, Israeli, and Palestinian—was truly transformative. Despite differences, and even in the shadow of long-standing conflicts, we were united in dialogue on one of today’s most pressing humanitarian issues: migration. Witnessing this unity was a beautiful experience.

Life on board required us to speak openly, to listen, and to share our stories. These conversations taught me so much more about the world, and about our shared pursuit of peace and equality.

None of this would have been possible without MED 25, and I am truly grateful to have been part of it.
